Starfield Mod Revolutionizes Space Travel Experience

A transformative mod for Starfield has finally addressed a significant critique of the game: seamless space travel. Despite Starfield's substantial commercial success, its approach to space exploration has been a topic of spirited debate. Those fond of Bethesda's signature sandbox experience, as seen in titles like Skyrim and Fallout 4, may hold a favorable view of Starfield. On the other hand, enthusiasts seeking a more pronounced "space sim" element have expressed a desire for a more immersive experience.

While Starfield's ship builder offers creative freedom for designing spacecraft, the gameplay primarily revolves around exploring the game's diverse worlds. This design choice plays to Bethesda's strengths, where the loop of delving into random dungeons and venturing into the unknown keeps players engaged even after completing the main storyline. However, certain features like ship combat and lingering mechanics like ship fuel hint at a more ambitious concept for space travel in Starfield during its earlier development stages.

Courtesy of 105gun, a mod creator from Starfield Nexus, fans can now enhance their Starfield adventure by seamlessly traveling from one planet to another within a star system. The "Starfield Slower Than Light" mod introduces new hotkeys for players to significantly increase their spaceship's travel speed. Since the official Creation Kit for Starfield won't be released until early 2024, 105gun's solution serves as a workaround rather than a fully integrated feature. Nevertheless, given the circumstances, it stands as an impressive feat of modding.

While one could argue that the current exploration loop in Starfield functions adequately, the addition of proper modding for space travel could potentially elevate the overall experience. Starfield mods have already begun enhancing the game, and with the imminent release of official modding tools, creators will have the opportunity to push the boundaries even further. Looking ahead, it's conceivable that in a few years, players might seamlessly land on planets using clever "loading screens" akin to those utilized in the Star Wars: Jedi games.

It's important to note a limitation of the "Starfield Slower Than Light" mod—it exclusively facilitates interplanetary travel and does not enable ships to travel between different star systems. Given Starfield's inclusion of grav jumping, both as a gameplay mechanic and a part of the game's lore, this compromise appears logical. The trajectory of Starfield's modding scene remains to be seen, but it has undoubtedly embarked on an ambitious and promising journey.
