Michael Douse, Larian Studios' Director of Publishing, addressed comments regarding Baldur's Gate 3 that surfaced in internal emails during a significant Microsoft data leak. Within the leak, certain Microsoft communications delved into the expenses tied to integrating Baldur's Gate 3 into Xbox Game Pass and expressed skepticism regarding the game's potential success.
Inadvertently uploaded to the Northern District of California's file repository were over 120 documents pertaining to Microsoft's ongoing acquisition of Activision Blizzard, lacking proper redaction. These leaks unveiled confidential details regarding Microsoft's strategies for Xbox Series X console revisions and forthcoming plans for the next console generation, triggering a response from Xbox lead Phil Spencer, who dismissed the leaks as dated and encouraged gamers to await Xbox's upcoming developments. However, the leaks encompassed more than just this information.
According to internal emails exposed in the leak, Microsoft estimated the cost of integrating Baldur's Gate 3 into Xbox Game Pass to be over $5 million, classifying the game as a "second-run Stadia PC RPG" prior to its Steam release in August 2023. Responding to these leaked remarks, Douse took to Twitter to emphasize that Microsoft was not unique in underestimating Baldur's Gate 3. Drawing a parallel, Douse mentioned a similar comparison made between Divinity: Original Sin 2 and the turn-based RPG genre overall, highlighting the industry's inherent doubts during development. He stressed that gauging the potential success of an RPG like Baldur's Gate 3 before launch was inherently uncertain, necessitating strategic steps during the development process.
Expressing gratitude, Douse acknowledged Baldur's Gate 3 fans for refraining from underestimating both the game and its developers. Shortly after the leak garnered attention, Baldur's Gate 3 rolled out its third significant patch, addressing numerous bugs and issues. A notable feature of Patch 3 was the Magic Mirror, enabling players to modify their character's voice, pronouns, and certain aspects of their appearance, such as facial features, while race and body type remained unchanged.
Despite the leaked comments from Microsoft, Baldur's Gate 3 remains on track for release between September and November 2023 on the Xbox Series X/S. Only time will reveal the reception of Baldur's Gate 3 on the platform in light of these revelations from the Microsoft leaks.
